For more than 230 years the Prison Society has been the go-to ombuds and advocate for incarcerated people in Pennsylvania. Their team is dedicated to the proposition that everyone is entitled to a life of dignity and caring, and empathy and impartiality are not mutually exclusive.

The team at The Society wanted to refresh their identity and web presence in order to garner trust from vulnerable impacted communities, make the many resources PaPS offers more accessible, and educate those who are unfamiliar with the PA Prison system and the challenges it creates.

Our primary goal when creating the Pennsylvania Prison Society’s website was emphasizing critical resources in order of urgency for the community. We created easy access for the community to quickly reach the resources they need while softening difficult topics with representative illustration and an overall human, warm approach to the user interface.

We believe in the power of illustration to foster empathy, connect communities, and create impact.

After taking plenty of time to learn about the needs of the PaPS and their Community Advisory board, we created a library of illustrations for their team to use across web and social media applications. We used photo reference for all of the figures when creating the library in order to make our cast of characters feel as much like real people as possible.
